Eye Health Foods For Better Vision

Nutrition has long been thought to play an important role in eye health and maintaining good eyesight for children, adults and elderly alike. It's only recently – in the last 3 decades – that scientific studies have proven this to be a fact.

Thanks to advances in ocular photography and standardized protocols in nutritional assessment, there have been a number of large population-based studies that have outlined the role of nutrition in conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. All in all these studies have confirmed our suspicion that a generally 'healthy' diet is paramount in helping to maintain good eyesight throughout your life.

Most nutrients and vitamins for eye health are readily available in fresh fruits and vegetables. In general, a diet that is good for your heart, is also good of your eyes.

Important eye vitamins and minerals include vitamins A, C and E, and the minerals zinc and selenium. Other important nutrients include lutein, zeaxanthin and essential fatty acids. Most nutrients and vitamins for eye health are readily available in fresh fruits and vegetables. It's best to consume these foods raw and freshly grown, since the process of cooking, freezing, canning and drying greatly reduces the concentration of vitamins.

Eye Health Supplements VS Eye Health Foods

The latest studies have shown that supplements do work. Many patients who suffer from early signs of age-related macular degeneration are given supplements that contain a combination of zinc and vitamins E and C.

However it is always better to stick to eye health foods rather than supplements wherever you can. A natural food substance – like the tomato for example – in addition to containing known chemicals like vitamin E, will also contain millions of different micronutrients that scientists haven't discovered yet. These micronutrients work with vitamin E to  bring about a benefit to the human body and the eyes. Vitamin E in nature, never works alone.

The problem with supplements is that we extract the vitamin E from the tomato and make a pill out of it. The vitamin E in this pill does work on its own, and as a result can have some harmful side-effects, especially when taken in excess.
